Who Makes the Most From Oil and Gas Leases on Public Land?

BLM.gov -- The GAO calculated the U.S. government ranked 93rd lowest out of 104 fiscal systems surveyed, losing between $21 and $53 billion in potential revenue.

The Department of the Interior disagreed with the GAO’s 40-page analysis, and released a 300-page study. The GAO’s analysis of this complicated arena was superficial and inadequate.
The government take as a proportion of the cash flow, typically nets more than the oil or gas-producing company does. The IHS-CERA study finds that on average the federal government captures 64 percent of the cash flow from Gulf of Mexico deepwater oil leases.

Fig 2 shows how it works with gas leases in Wyoming, the “government take” ranging from a low of 50 percent to a high of 73 percent.

Who makes the most -- not the government. It's the welfare cowboys and welfare oilmen at the public trough -- BLM lands (our lands).

The government will get their money first from lease fees and/or taxes, the speculators, manipulators and the banks will continue to unfairly and unjustly make the driving public pay higher prices at the pump. Big oil and refineries will export fuel and natural gas to other countries for additional profits. The US oil and natural gas resources that belong to the citizens of this country and are to be used by those same citizens! Barry will support natural gas and oil production to pay for his ‘spending gone wild’ addiction.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

So besides direct taxation, our own gov has additional means of jacking up our gas prices.

The higher the price of crude the more likely fringe and less easily produced crude will come into being cost effective to harvest.

If they charge more for using the public land, we'll just be paying more.. But we're getting screwed either way... so the govt may as well charge them more and not raise our taxes..

Wow, GREAT article! I hope I will never again see a comment about "greedy big oil" or "speculators" being responsible for high gas prices, when the truth is laid out in this article: the GREEDY GOVERNMENT gets 50-73% of the money! Vote the big government bozos out of office!

Typical, the government always takes more than their share, should be big government, not big oil.

Goes to show - The government publishes figures which can be bent any way they wish, by conveniently leaving out some of the facts that normally go in to figures like this.

Bottom line - The Govenment takes 64% of the cash flow, then tells us we should be concerned about "Big oil".

When folks wake up, they are more concerned about "Big Government". . . .

They have their hands in our pockets at every turn.. . . .

BLM, GAO, and the Department of Interior all battle over whose accountants are the best and whose figures are correct. You've got to love it.

Government "take" occurs with little expense, compared to the company that drills and produces 24/7 each day.

If Uncle Sam is making money off oil and gas, the EVs/alt are DEAD...
Maybe thats why Uncle Sam pushed corn water for 30 yrs, low MPG, more gas and oil, more money???

The government is the owner of the land ... purchased from France (with tax money) or Mexico or taken from other colonial powers through warfare.

Who else is supposed to profit from a public asset but the public treasury?

Do writers here suggest it should be simply given to the oil companies?
